AFCON 2013 final was a blast on Twitter

While the world was watching Fun scoop The Best Song Grammy for their popular “We Are Young” track in the wee hours of this morning ZA time, Africa was still gripped by AFCON2013 final’s result – Nigeria 1:0 Burkina Faso. A lot was said about the Burkinabes’ unexpected appearance in the finals, but I think they acquitted themselves well and can take pride in their spirited performance.

There was something special about this win for the Nigerians:

The rhyme in the tweet above typifies the moment when you could say it all came together for Sunday Mba and the Super Eagles. Creative Twitterers had a ball, coining a few more interesting rhymes. Here’s my pick:

Looks like some wishful thinking South Africans were not complaining about Nigeria winning the tournament (or was this sour grapes?):

AFCON’s trending on Twitter was not a fluke. The final game generated the biggest tweeting traffic of the tournament:

A sample of AFCON tweets shows that mobile devices played a key role in posting content relating to the final game:

It was a good tournament overall despite limited marketing by Local Organising Committee, apparent pessimism displayed by the host nation before the beginning of the tournament, ticket sales glitches initially experienced, fact that Bafana Bafana were knocked out in the quarters, and dusty pitches of some of the hosting stadiums including The Calabash :)
